Phonics at St. Michael's – St Michael's CE Primary School Blog

We will send home a folder containing the sounds and words learned in school each week. This will be sent home on FRIDAYS. We will also send home a book on the same day which your child has already read with us and will be proud to show you how well they can read it at home too.

BIG CAT LW L&S _SIT IN: Phase 2 Set 2 (Big Cat Phonics for Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised)

Your child will choose a book from our school Library. This will also be sent home on Friday. This is a book for you to read to your child and enjoy reading for pleasure.

Book bags need to be returned to school every THURSDAY. We will keep the bag overnight and change books and library books ready for Friday. You do not need to send the book bag on the other days in the week.

PE

P.E. day is Friday. Children come to school on Fridays wearing P.E. kit, including trainers which do not have laces.

Earrings MUST NOT be worn for P.E.

If your child has earrings which are unable to be removed they must be taped using medical tape or a plaster.

Long hair must be tied back for PE lessons.

What will we learn in Reception?

A typical day in Reception involves two morning and two afternoon whole class carpet sessions and throughout the rest of the day children free flow between the classrooms and outdoor area. We use the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme of work to teach reading and we follow a Mastery approach for Maths.

In the Early Years we follow 6 thematic units of work across the year. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, skills based, progressive and knowledge-rich and vocabulary driven. It enables our children to develop as happy, motivated, effective learners and independent thinkers. It lays the foundations for future learning so that all children can be school ready. Our themes are as follows:

Knowing Me, Knowing You - Autumn 1

Starry, Starry Night -

Autumn 2

Treasures of the Earth -

Spring 1

Look at That! -

Spring 2

What a Wonderful World -

Summer 1

Building Bridges and Stepping Stones - Summer 2
